Ōtorohanga Ultrasound offers a full range of high‑quality ultrasound examinations for patients referred by GPs, midwives, specialists, and physiotherapists.
Payment is completed before your appointment.
Please arrive 5–10 minutes early.
General Ultrasound
Referral required
Upper Abdomen / Liver / Gallbladder / Aorta
Appointment time: 30 minutes
Preparation:
Do not eat for 6 hours before your scan
You may drink water
Continue usual medications
If you have diabetes, check with your doctor for guidance
Renal (Kidneys)
Appointment time: 30 minutes
Preparation:
Arrive with a comfortably full bladder
Empty your bladder 1 hour before your scan, then promptly drink 3-4 glasses of water.
Female Pelvis
Appointment time: ~30 minutes
Preparation:
Arrive with a comfortably full bladder
Empty bladder 1 hour before, then drink 2–3 glasses of water
What to expect:
Scan begins transabdominally (externally)
Most adult patients are then offered a transvaginal (internal) scan for clearer detail
You will have privacy to change and a sheet for comfort
You may insert the probe yourself, or the sonographer can do this
The scan is usually not painful, though you may feel pressure
You may decline or stop the transvaginal scan at any time
A support person is welcome

Strapping, braces, or casts must be removed
Obstetric Ultrasound

Maternity surcharge: $30–$90 for NZ residents
Non‑NZ residents: $300–$350
Community Services Card: All pregnancy scans $30
Dating Scan (around 8 weeks)

Lower‑limb DVT scans include the entire leg from groin to ankle

Missed Appointment, Cancellation & Lateness Policy
To ensure fair access and maintain high clinical standards:
Cancellations or changes within 6 working hours may incur a $50 fee
Missed appointments may also incur the $50 fee
Late arrival may require your scan to be shortened or rescheduled
